Ferragosto: the Italian midsummer holiday, observed on the 15th of August, when the country more or less stops and heads for the coast. The rocks below Corniglia fill with bodies, boats drift just offshore, and the Ligurian Sea becomes, for a few weeks, the centre of the world.
This photograph was made during that pause. From above, the scene reads as pure composition: the dark geometry of the rocks, the white hulls of the boats, the particular blue that exists only here, in this light, at this time of year. But the image is also a document. A record of what summer looked like in a year when summer had to be reclaimed.
