Il Bagnante: the bather. A single figure, horizontal, given entirely to the sun. The Ligurian coast in high summer does this to people: it reduces the agenda to almost nothing. Warmth. Stone. The sound of water below.
The photograph was made in August 2020, a summer that felt different from the ones before it. Not louder, not more crowded, but more present. People were not simply relaxing. They were insisting on it, in the way you insist on something you had briefly been afraid of losing.
There is a particular quality to stillness captured from above. It becomes monumental. This is not a person resting. It is a person holding their place in the world.
