L'Approdo — Italian for "the landing" — is the name for the place where boats once came ashore. Corniglia sits a hundred metres above the sea, connected to the water below by 382 steps and not much else. This photograph looks out from that threshold: the rocky ledge at the base of the cliff, where the Ligurian Sea arrives quietly, without announcement.
The image was made in August 2020, in the first summer after the world had closed. The water was the colour it always is. The light came in the way it always does. Some things do not negotiate with circumstance.
This is a photograph about arrival. About looking up and understanding, before the climb, that what waits above is worth it.
